The Duchess of York shared a post on Instagram about ‘finding strength’ amidst the health challenges she has faced this past year

The Duchess of York has opened up about ‘finding strength’ following her cancer diagnosis that left her fearing life with her five grandchildren would be cut short.
Sarah Ferguson, Prince Andrew's ex-wife, was diagnosed with breast cancer during a routine mammogram in 2023, and has implored others to undergo screenings for the disease. Now, she has spoken of her shocking diagnosis and revealed how she was left reeling by the news. In an Instagram post shared to mark World Cancer Day, Fergie said she used a guided meditation app for ‘stress relief, rejuvenation, and self-care’ which she hailed as a healing ‘balm to your mind.’
After receiving the shocking diagnosis of breast cancer and malignant melanoma, she said: ‘I was trying to get my head around exactly whether I was going to see my grandchildren and whether I was going to see my children. This is why I am so delighted to have found Zoul.’
In an emotional statement, she spoke of her personal struggles when friends and family were taken by the disease. She added, ‘My father died of melanoma and my best friend died of melanoma and I had to use all my strength and mental awareness. I really had to go within to find the strength.’
Fans were touched by the heartfelt video, applauding Sarah for raising awareness for the mental health of cancer patients. One user said: ‘We love you Sarah. Please don’t ever stop being an inspiration.’
The post comes following the premature birth of her most recent grandchild to parents Princess Beatrice and property developer Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. In a touching tribute to baby Athena, who was born prematurely last month, Sarah said: ‘Overflowing with love and joy to be able to welcome Athena Elizabeth Rose into the world. She is already so adored, and I'm incredibly blessed to be a Granny once again.’
Affectionately known as Gi Gi by her family, she added that she was incredibly proud of: ‘Edo, Beatrice, and the rest of my little five-a-side team!’
In January, the Duchess took to Instagram to share the initial shock she felt when she was diagnosed in 2023. But having undergone a single mastectomy and extensive treatment, she said: ‘I’m in good spirits and grateful for the many messages of love and support.’
A spokesperson for Sarah said: ‘She believes her experience underlines the importance of checking the size, shape, colour and texture, external and emergence of new moles that can be a sign of melanoma.’
